About the Trip

This is a custom ActivSport Travel trip created for the RSU 3 Adult & Community Education to explore the culture of Italy’s cities and countryside. City tours, cultural excursions, wine tastings, and recreational activities are included throughout the tour.

What’s Included

Guided Tours/Activities

All guided tours/activities (including entrance fees) to cultural/historic sites, museums, and other points of interest as listed are included throughout the tour.

Trip Leader Services

Full-time Trip Leaders assigned to your group for the duration of the trip and available to answer questions, handle emergencies, etc.

Accommodations

Accommodation each night at 3 or 4-star properties in double occupancy.

Other Meals

For most lunches and dinners, you will be free to make your own selections.

Breakfast at your accommodation is included each day, along with dinner on June 23 and lunch on June 25. Wine tastings are also included.

Ground Transportation

All ground transportation costs upon arrival (including fuel surcharges, tolls, and parking).

Airfare

Round-trip airfare, including taxes, fuel surcharges, and fees from Boston. (package without flights available if you prefer to purchase your own airfare).

Incidentals

Trip Itinerary

June 20 - Travel Day

Depart Boston to fly overnight to Rome.

June 21 - Colosseum & Roman Forum

Arrive at Rome FCO airport, meet AS Travel staff, and transfer into the city. Check into the hotel or drop off bags depending on arrival time. To start the trip (and keep you awake so you adjust to the new timezone), we will head to Rome’s most iconic sites; the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, for a guided visit into some of Rome’s most fascinating history. Evening free to relax after the long trip.

June 22 - Rome Walking Tour & Vatican City

In the morning, we will have a walking tour of central Rome, including sites like the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Campo di Fiore, and Piazza Navona. Afternoon visit to Vatican City, including Michaelangelo’s spectacular Sistine Chapel at the Vatican Museum, & the enormous and ornate St. Peter's Basilica.

June 23 - Tivoli Gardens & Montalcino Wine Tasting

After breakfast, we will check out of the hotel, load our private bus, and drive out to Vila d'Este, home to the Tivoli Gardens. Situated in Tivoli, near Rome, the villa is a gem of architectural and landscape splendor. The extraordinary complex is famous worldwide for its splendid fountains characterized by wonderful water displays and for being the most beautiful example of the Italian Renaissance garden in Europe. Following our visit, we will continue north into the rolling hills of Tuscany. Our afternoon stop is in Montalcino, where we will have a wine-tasting experience of Montalcino's famous Brunello wines at Enoteca La Fortezza. Free time to explore the village and the Fortezza's ramparts following the tasting. We will check into our hotel in the evening, then have dinner near the hotel.

June 24 - Florence Highlights & Uffizi Gallery

After a short drive into Florence, we will start the day with a walking tour to see the best sites Florence has to offer in just a couple of hours, including the famous Duomo, Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), and the Piazza della Signoria. After the tour, we will visit the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, home to Renaissance art masterpieces. After, free time to explore Florence and have dinner on your own. Before leaving town, we will visit the Piazzale Michaelangelo for world-class views and photos of Florence. Return to the hotel.

June 26 - Explore Spoleto

After breakfast, we will check out of the hotel, load the bus, and drive to Spoleto in Umbria. In the afternoon, we will explore this fantastic old Roman city from its origins until modern-day times on a guided walking tour. Check into the hotel in the evening.

June 25 - San Gimignano, Casa Emma, & Siena

In the morning, we will visit San Gimignano. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in preserving about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls, form an unforgettable skyline. We will then head to Casa Emma, where we will dive deep into the flavors of the Tuscan local cuisine in the splendid setting of their vineyards. The tour begins with a visit of the Estate, to discover the Chianti Classico area, the history of the family, and the various winemaking and wine-aging processes. At the end of the tour, we will have a private tasting featuring a selection of 5 wines paired with a three-course lunch, prepared following a seasonal menu. After, we will head to Siena, known for its well-preserved historic center with its architecture and ancient streets, which is considered one of the best examples of medieval urban design in Italy. Free time for exploration and dinner before returning back to the hotel.

June 27 - Montefalco Wine

In the morning, you will have the option to either relax at the hotel, the pool area, etc., or do an E-Bike ride on the Spoleto-Norcia Rail Trail (supplemental cost), with wonderful views of the rolling countryside. After, we have free time in Montefalco for lunch. In the afternoon, we will do a winery visit to Antonelli to learn about and taste Montefalco's famous wines. Free time in Spoleto in the evening.

June 28 - Adventure Day

We will start our day with a visit to the world's largest man-made waterfall, at Marmore, built by the Romans in 271 BC. After, you can choose your own adventure: whitewater rafting, "soft rafting/tubing" (suitable for anyone over 4 years old), or canyoning (rappelling down waterfalls, swimming in canyons, etc.)! In the evening we will have a farewell dinner at Ristorante Le Casaline (guests can order and pay for what they want).

June 29 - Travel Home

Depart for Rome FCO airport, fly back to Boston.

Travel Requirements

For US citizens, you must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to depart the Schengen Area. If you will be traveling on a passport from another country, please check the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website to see if you have different requirements.
