Trip Details - “Educate Beyond the Classroom”

AS Travel’s “Civil Rights Awareness Tour” is a comprehensive educational experience focusing on the struggles and successes of African Americans from the time of slavery up to the present day. Our carefully designed itinerary takes you to some of the most important places of the Civil Rights Trail, including Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham. You will learn, first hand, from the experiences of our local guides who have lived and breathed the Civil Rights Movement and develop a sense of awareness for the sacrifices that so many have made in the name of equality. This trip is “living history” and the understanding of the struggle for Civil Rights is as important now as it has ever been. Along the way, you will enjoy delicious Soul Food, southern hospitality, authentic music, and a vibrant culture that has contributed so much to our country and the world beyond.

Civil Rights Awareness Itinerary

Day 1 - Atlanta

Late morning/early afternoon arrival to Atlanta by flight or vehicle. After arrival, we will head to the APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) which serves as our starting point for understanding Black History and the struggle for civil rights.

Day 2 - Atlanta

We will start the day with a visit to Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home on a guided tour. Next, we will walk to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was first ordained. We conclude the morning at the “King Center” to learn about the King family’s legacy. After lunch, you will have free time to explore or visit the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library to learn about the 39th president, who has done so much for humanitarian efforts and civil rights. Travel to Montgomery, Alabama.

Day 3 - Montgomery

In the morning, we will have a guided tour to better understand the many sites that make Montgomery such an important part of the Civil Rights movement. After, we will visit the highly acclaimed Legacy Museum and Memorial for Peace and Justice, a truly transformative experience. In the afternoon, we will visit the Rosa Parks Museum. Following the museum, we will drive to Selma, stopping halfway at the Lowndes Interpretive Center “Tent City” to learn about the dispossessed Black tenant farmers who took refuge there as well as the Selma voting rights struggle.

Day 4 -Selma

Today we will go on a guided walking tour to learn about the events surrounding the voting rights struggle in Selma and the marches to Montgomery, including Blood Sunday. Sites on the tour include the Brown Chapel AME Church, Selma Interpretive Center, and the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Afternoon departure to Birmingham.

Day 5 - Birmingham

In the morning, our local Birmingham tour guide will share the stories and the history of Birmingham’s reputation as the “most segregated city in the country”. We will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute for a look at segregation and the Black Community’s fight for equality. Next, we will visit the 16th Street Baptist Church where 4 young girls perished in a KKK bombing and where MLK spoke in support of the civil rights movement.  After lunch, we will head to Kelly Ingram Park, the site of Civil Rights mass meetings and rallies in the 1960s. In the late afternoon, drive to Atlanta, where you will return home via flight or ground transportation.
